That is four times the standard Workplace Charging Scheme per-socket cap. For eligible schools and education institutions, the grant can materially change the business case — but electrical capacity, parking use and the 180-day voucher window still need planning before installation.

Start with site use

A school charging project can serve staff, fleet, visitors — and potentially the wider community.

The grant does not restrict supported parking to staff only. Current scheme guidance allows the associated off-street parking to be used by customers, guests, visitors, staff or others.

Workplace Charging Scheme for state-funded education

The enhanced grant is unusually valuable — if the institution qualifies.

The scheme is available to state-funded schools and other state-funded education institutions in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Previous applications made through the Workplace Charging Scheme count toward the 40-socket allocation. The government reserves the right to change or end the scheme, subject to its published notice arrangements.

Why the education scheme matters

Eight sockets: £4,000 standard WCS cap vs £16,000 education cap.

The percentage rule still applies, so neither number is an automatic award. But the larger education cap can cover much more of a qualifying project.

Academy trusts

The 40-socket limit can apply separately to each institution in an academy trust.

Current government guidance says academy trusts can apply for up to the maximum 40 sockets for each institution within the trust. Multi-academy trusts should complete a separate application for each school or institution.

This makes site-by-site planning important: each institution should have its own charging requirement, electrical assessment and application rather than treating the trust estate as one undifferentiated project.

7kW vs 22kW at schools

Long staff dwell time makes 7kW a strong starting point.

Staff vehicles can remain parked for most of the school day, so several managed 7kW sockets may serve more users with less electrical demand than fewer 22kW sockets.

22kW can be useful where parking periods are shorter or vehicles have larger daily energy needs — but suitable three-phase capacity and vehicle AC capability must both be checked.

Grant-linked technical conditions

The scheme has practical site requirements — not just a funding cap.

Current government guidance includes minimum socket power, parking-space and accessibility conditions that should be considered before the school chooses charger quantity.

Minimum socket power — at least 3kW to each individual socket, not diminished below that by simultaneous use.

Parking-space relationship — no more than one socket installed for each accessible parking space.

Inclusive design — placement, design and the surrounding built environment should consider disabled users' needs.

Site survey first — GOV.UK says an authorised installer should assess whether the site's electrical capacity can support the requested sockets before application.

Eligible equipment — funded installations must use eligible commercial chargepoints installed by an authorised installer.

Audit readiness — OZEV can audit installations and request documents or site access before or after a claim is paid.

Application sequence

Survey first. Apply second. Install after the voucher arrives.

The grant process is designed around a pre-installation application. A school should not treat the grant as something to claim retrospectively after chargers have already been fitted.

Out-of-hours / public charging

Education-funded chargers can support public use — but charging for access changes the operating requirements.

The scheme asks applicants whether they plan to open chargepoints for public use. If the institution opens them to the public and charges users, current government guidance says it must comply with the Public Charge Point Regulations 2023 and the commercial chargepoint technical specification.

Government grant guidance also says public use should be considered as part of a package supporting sustainable school travel, including active travel and public transport.

School project brief

Give installers the operating picture, not just a socket count.

A good education charging brief should cover term-time patterns, parking ownership, staff/fleet demand, school-gate traffic and potential out-of-hours use.

Users — staff, minibuses, pool cars, visitors and any public/community charging.

Parking pattern — staff arrival/departure, visitor turnover, events and holiday periods.

Electrical data — current site supply, maximum demand and known high-load equipment.

Traffic management — charging bays should not create conflicts at school drop-off and collection times.

Access controls — RFID, staff accounts, visitor access and public-payment policy.

Growth — future electric minibuses, staff uptake and additional sockets across the institution's sites.

How much is the EV charger grant for state-funded schools in 2026?

The current Workplace Charging Scheme for state-funded education institutions covers up to 75% of eligible purchase and installation costs, capped at £2,000 per socket and 40 sockets across all sites. It is confirmed until 31 March 2027.

Is the maximum grant £80,000?

Forty sockets multiplied by £2,000 creates an £80,000 headline socket cap for an institution, but that is not an automatic award. The grant is also limited to 75% of eligible purchase and installation costs, and previous WCS applications count toward the socket allocation.

Can an academy trust apply for 40 sockets at every school?

Current guidance says academy trusts can apply for up to the 40-socket maximum for each institution within the trust. Multi-academy trusts should complete a separate application for each school or institution.

Can visitors or members of the public use grant-funded school chargers?

Yes. The designated parking may be used by customers, guests, visitors, staff or others. If the chargepoints are opened to the public and users are charged, Public Charge Point Regulations and related technical requirements apply.

Do independent schools qualify for the £2,000 grant?

No. The enhanced education scheme is for state-funded schools and education institutions. GOV.UK directs independent schools to the standard Workplace Charging Scheme.

A successful applicant receives a unique voucher code valid for 180 days from issue. The installation must be completed within that period.
