Hotels have one of the best charging assets available: time. Overnight parking often makes lower-power AC charging more practical than rapid charging, while the right access and payment model can turn the charger into an amenity, a revenue stream or both.

Guest charging model

Decide what charging is meant to achieve before choosing hardware.

A hotel can treat charging as a complimentary amenity, recover its electricity cost, sell charging for margin or use the bays as a public destination service. Each option changes the software, payment and regulatory requirements.

Dwell time advantage

An overnight guest rarely needs a rapid charger.

If a vehicle is parked for 10–12 hours, charger speed can be much lower than at a motorway stop. That can reduce hardware cost, electrical demand and the risk of needing major connection work.

Actual energy delivered will be lower and limited by the vehicle, charge state and charging losses, but this shows why a standard AC socket can refill a substantial amount of range during a hotel stay.

More sockets can be more useful than more kilowatts.

A guest arriving at 6pm and leaving at 8am has a long charging window. For many hotels, several load-managed AC bays create a better guest experience than one expensive rapid charger that guests must move cars to share.

Useful where stays are shorter.

Consider it for restaurants, leisure destinations and hotels with suitable three-phase capacity. The EV must also accept the higher AC rate.

Public Charge Point Regulations

A hotel car park can be “public” even when charging is only for customers.

Government guidance specifically includes privately owned hotel car parks in examples of locations that can contain public chargepoints. Restricted opening hours or limiting access to customers does not automatically make a charger private.

If the chargepoints are public, the charge point operator must meet the relevant Public Charge Point Regulations 2023 requirements. Many hotels use a managed CPO platform so these operational responsibilities are handled by a specialist provider.

The hotel's actual electrical position is the biggest unknown.

Kitchens, laundry, heating, spas, pools and event facilities can already create substantial site demand. Chargepoint design should consider when those loads occur and whether smart load management can keep charging inside the site's usable capacity.

Workplace Charging Scheme

Small accommodation businesses have a useful WCS advantage.

The current Workplace Charging Scheme explicitly includes eligible small accommodation businesses, and unlike an ordinary business application, their grant-supported parking can be used by customers, guests, visitors, staff or others.

Important distinction

Public access does not prevent a qualifying small accommodation business using WCS.

Current grant guidance states there is no restriction on who may use parking for public authorities, charities and small accommodation businesses. If the hotel makes chargepoints available to the public, it must also comply with the Public Charge Point Regulations 2023.

Pricing strategy

Charging revenue is only one reason to install.

For hospitality, the commercial return can come from room conversion, guest satisfaction and repeat visits as well as the electricity margin. Choose the pricing model that supports the wider customer proposition.

Free

Make charging part of the stay.

Simple for guests and useful as a booking amenity. Put controls around duration, idle parking and who receives access.

Best measured by guest value, not charging margin.
Cost recovery

Charge enough to cover operation.

Build the tariff around electricity, payment fees, CPMS, maintenance and any desired contribution to capital cost.

Transparent p/kWh pricing matters for public charging.

Guest experience

The best charger is useless if the bay is blocked or the guest cannot start it.

Hospitality charging is partly an operations problem. Arrival instructions, bay management, payment support and overnight parking policy deserve as much thought as charger specification.

Booking journey — tell guests how many chargers exist, power rating and whether a bay can be reserved.

Arrival instructions — clear signage, bay location and simple start/payment information.

Bay policy — decide whether vehicles can remain parked after charging completes overnight.

Access fallback — reception staff need a process when apps, RFID or payment fail.

Maintenance — define who monitors faults and how quickly broken chargepoints are restored.

Future bays — install ducts or distribution capacity for later expansion where economical.

Public or guest-only?

Access policy should be a conscious commercial choice.

Opening charging to non-residents can improve utilisation and visibility, particularly at restaurants, spas, event venues and roadside hotels. But it also means balancing passing drivers against bays needed by overnight guests.

For regulatory purposes, “guest-only” does not necessarily mean private. Government guidance gives customer-only car parks as examples that can still contain public chargepoints.

Questions hospitality operators ask before installing.

What EV charger is best for a hotel?

7 kW AC is often a strong starting point for overnight guests because dwell time is long and electrical demand per socket is relatively modest. 22 kW can suit shorter stays where three-phase capacity and vehicle compatibility support it. Rapid DC is more appropriate where vehicles need substantial energy during short dwell periods.

Can a hotel get a grant for EV chargers?

Eligible small accommodation businesses are included in the current Workplace Charging Scheme. It can cover up to 75% of eligible purchase and installation costs including VAT, capped at £500 per socket and 40 sockets across all sites. The current scheme closes on 31 March 2027.

Can WCS-funded hotel chargers be used by guests?

Yes, where the applicant qualifies as a small accommodation business. Current grant guidance says there is no restriction on who may use the parking — customers, guests, visitors, staff or others. Public use can trigger Public Charge Point Regulations obligations.

Are hotel EV chargers public chargepoints?

They can be. Government guidance specifically identifies hotel car parks as an example of privately owned locations containing public chargepoints. Restricted hours or customer-only access do not automatically put a charger outside the regulations.

Do hotel EV chargers need contactless payment?

For public charging, all new chargepoints of 8 kW and above deployed after 24 November 2024 and all public chargepoints of 50 kW and above must offer contactless payment. Public chargers that remain free to use are outside that contactless requirement.

Can the hotel bundle charging with parking or a room rate?

A charging service can be offered alongside other products or services, but where the Public Charge Point Regulations apply, the portion of the price relating to charging must still be clearly displayed separately in p/kWh.
